News, in their annual High School Preview in the February issue,
ranks four athletes from North Carolina as the top returning performers
in their event, based on PRs.
Charlotte Harding junior Kamorean Hayes is the top returner in both the SP (51-1) and DT (162-10). She is a foot and a half ahead of the 2nd best in the shot and almost five feet ahead of the 2nd best in the discus.
Southern Durham junior Patience Coleman is tied with a Texas athlete as best returning in the HJ (6-0).
Karjuan Williams (New Bern) is the top returner in the 800m (1:50.14), and is 10th fastest returning in the 400m (47.14).
Sandy Roberts (Raleigh Broughton) is tops in the 2-mile (8:59.23). Roberts is also 4th in the Mile (4:10.2).
Chapel Hill's Jack Bolas is #2 in the Mile (4:09.68), behind Pennsylvania's Craig Miller.
Junior Johnny Dutch (Clayton) is #4 in the 110mHH (13.82) and 12th in the 300mH (38.01).
Southeast Raleigh junior Gabby Mayo is 6th in the 100H (13.93) and tied for 11th in the 100 (11.63).
East Chapel Hill junior Antonio Sales is tied for 8th in the 200m (21.20).

NCAA champion Jesse Williams (Raleigh Broughton, '02) was ranked 2nd in the U.S. high jump rankings.
Forsyth Country Day grad ('93) Blake (Phillips) Russell was 3rd in the U.S. marathon rankings and 4th in the 5000/10,000 rankings. Russell had the 35th fastest 10,000 time (31:35.25) and 42nd fastest marathon (2:29:10) in the world for 2005.
Former Leesville Road and Cardinal Gibbons athlete Leigh Smith was ranked 5th in the U.S. javelin rankings.
Kannapolis A.L. Brown alum Melissa Morrison-Howard was ranked 7th in the 100 hurdles.
'97 Watauga grad Lindsay Taylor ranked 7th in the PV. Her 14-5 1/4 last year tied for 29th best vault of the year.
'05 Mt Tabor graduate J-Mee Samuels' 10.08 National High School Record gave him a tie for 6th on the 2005 U.S. list and tie for 17th on the world list. His 20.32 was 9th on the U.S. list and tied for 15th on the world list. Samuels was not ranked in the U.S. top 10 in either event.

N. Gaston grad Duane Ross was 25th on the world HH list (13.41) and 14th on the US list.
Cassie King who ran for E. Forsyth was 15th (10:08.70) on the U.S. women's steeplechase list, with Tseheya Dagnachew (Jacksonville) 32nd (10:21.18).
Crystal Cox (Pine Forest, '97) was 15th (51.92) on the U.S. 400 list and 31st (23.21) on the 200 list.
Person Co. grad Mary Jayne Harrelson was 16th (4:13.21) in the 1500 and 32nd (2:05.37) in the 800.
Myers Park grad Julia Lucas was 19th (15:50.96) on the U.S. 5000 list and 38th (4:20.03) fastest in the 1500.
Former N. Rowan star LaTasha Pharr was 22nd best in the TJ (43-1)
