Reynolds sweeps city/county track titles

Reynolds has proved itself as the undisputed ruler of local high-school track.

The Demons boys and girls teams took charge from the start and ran off with the team titles in yesterday's City/County Track and Field Championships at Mount Tabor High School.

The Reynolds girls, who won seven of 18 events, amassed 205 points to blow away the rest of the field. North Forsyth was a distant second with 138 1/2 points. It's the first city/county title for the Demons since 1995.

"The dedication and leadership of our seniors is the big difference for us this year," said Coach Jeff George of the Reynolds girls team. "They took it upon themselves to set a tone that the rest of the team follows. Without their leadership, we wouldn't be where we are at this point of the season."

Reynolds showed signs of early dominance with a strong showing in the field events. Joanna Wright got the field-events MVP award, winning the pole vault and finishing third in the long jump and fourth in the high jump.

Ashley Samuel and Porsha' Evans-Hardy continued that trend by turning in noteworthy performances as the meet's co-MVPs for running events. Samuel, an MVP from last year's meet, won the 800, anchored the 4x800 relay team to victory, then placed second in the 3,200-meter run and third in the 1,600. Evans-Hardy ran anchor for a 4x100 relay team that won easily and she posted second-place finishes in the 100 hurdles, 100 and 200-meter dashes.

"There have been some down times with Reynolds girls track," said Evans-Hardy, who serves as team captain with sprint partner Karlyn Duncan. "We've made it a habit all year to stress to everybody that every practice counts, so it's always best to give it your best. That's how we've been progressing and it's a big reason for us being successful."

Aside from Samuel and Evans-Hardy, the Demons got a big contribution from Duncan, who took firsts in the 100 and 4x100 relay, and placed third in the 200 and 400-meter sprints. "I'm very proud and excited about what this team has accomplished," said Duncan. "We're all seeing the proof that hard work does pay off and we're looking forward to accomplishing more for the rest of this season."

For the Reynolds boys, yesterday was a repeat of last year's championship. The Demons finished with 137 points in the team standings, and East Forsyth was the runner-up with 122 1/2 points.

"This meet is always the most exciting for us every season," said Coach Norman Trzaskoma of the Reynolds boys. "There's so much enthusiasm. It's the one meet when you get to compete against people that you rub shoulders with. Many of the kids know each other and they like competing against each other and winning."

Entering the meet, the boys' sprint competition was viewed as a two-team showdown between Reynolds and Parkland. But it was Johnny Svoboda of East Forsyth who finished the night as the meet's most-outstanding sprinter. Svoboda pulled off a sweep in the open 200 and 400, and he anchored the Eagles' 4x400 relay team to victory. He also placed sixth in the 100.

"I've been working out a lot harder than I have in previous years," said Svoboda. "Coming into this meet, I felt strong. That was the big difference. When you're competing, it all comes down to who has worked harder in the offseason. As for today, I know I couldn't have gotten the MVP had it not been for my teammates on the relay team."

In the 100 meters, Tim Shepard of Parkland and Archie Barrow of Reynolds were the showcase performers. Shepard, who beat Barrow in last year's championships, pulled away at 60 meters, but Barrow closed with a rush over the last 15 meters to win by a step in 10.77 seconds, his second-fastest time ever.

"After losing to him last year, I've always had that race on my mind," said Barrow.
